Kulasekarapattinam is a small village in Tuticorin district, Tamil Nadu. Every year, roughly 1,500,000 devotees gather at the 300-year-old Mutharamman temple at this place to celebrate a 10 day long Dasara. During the festivities, devotees wear the attire which resembles Kali or Amman costumes. The devotees are obligated to fast for 41 days if they have to adorn the Goddess costume, while those wear other costumes have to fast for 11 days. One of the unique feature of the festival is that the devotees should not spend from their pocket for costume or food. They are expected to beg for alms and token offerings from door to door. The extra possessions they acquired from thier beseech has to be offered at shrine after meeting out their expenses.
